Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
