Shifting from Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.

Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's name and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.

“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release

But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the offensive.

“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.

Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given physical folders of files that included no new information.
